WPSC has a proud racing tradition that has produced many excellent sailors including in recent years David Kay, Dean Tomlinson and Mark Kay. Mark is still a regular at West Pennine, winning races, lending spare kit (if he can't sell it....) and running race training evenings and weekends.
The main racing at WPSC is course racing (open to all comers, non-members entry fee £5) and from June 3rd 2006 will be held on Saturday afternoons, first race @ 2:00 p.m. The atmosphere is competitive but also supportive; there are some excellent sailors but they are keen to encourage and include the newcomers and the not-so-good. A wide variety of kit is used but most are sailing on production longboards (Cat, Equipe, Lighting) with 7.5sq metre sails or Formula unlimited (ie. any rig or board). The race series is run within RYA/UKBSA rules. WPSC is one of the venues on the UKBSA North West Traveller series. Many members are keen competitors in both the regional series and UKWA national events.
When there's enough steady wind for shortboards, slalom or drag racing course are set with raucous beach starts and lots of white water round the marks. Even when conditions aren't good for slalom racing many short boarders are regulars who enjoy the clear winds and flat water.
